Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland

Over the last 12 months, Cruse Scotland’s bereavement support services have never been more needed. The Covid-19 pandemic has claimed thousands of lives in Scotland. It has cut us off from family and friends – those we can usually turn to, to help us through our grief, offer a hug and share memories of the ones we’ve lost. Funerals have become socially-distanced and small, robbing us of comforting rituals and celebrations of life. We can’t busy ourselves with the usual distractions.

But thanks to the National Emergencies Trust’s Coronavirus Appeal, Cruse Scotland has been able to increase and extend its support of bereaved people across the country. The national bereavement helpline, Cruse Scotland’s first port of call for anyone wanting to talk about their grief, is now available 7 days a week and has switched to a freephone number (0808 802 6161). The charity has been able to double its helpline volunteer base and train them in specialist bereavement listening skills.

Cruse Scotland’s helpline was even able to open every day of the Christmas holidays, which meant the world to this caller, who lost her husband on 22 December after a terminal cancer diagnosis only 5 weeks before: “If you hadn’t answered my call on that difficult day, I know that I would not have gone on from strength to strength. Just knowing that someone was on the other end of the line gave that security blanket that I needed. I do have a very good support network in my friends and family but sometimes you don’t want to burden them with your sadness, especially when they are with their loved ones.”

Keith Robertson, CEO of Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland said, ‘Cruse Scotland is here for you, every day, to support you in your grief. Whether the person you are grieving died recently, or decades ago, Cruse Scotland’s helpline volunteers will provide compassion, kindness and understanding. We will listen to you for as long as you need, and will help you to access further support should you require it.’
