Dimobi Children’s Disability Trust
Newton-Heath based charity Dimobi Children’s Disability Trust was set up to support the needs of children and their families who are living with learning disabilities. They help to eliminate the cultural and societal stigmas associated with children with disabilities and support families to seek early professional help to give their child the best start in life. Dimobi has been an important platform for parents and has given them a voice. Over the years, the charity has organised community activities like parent forums and outings for children.
For families dealing with disabilities, things can obviously be tough, but the pandemic brought further challenges, and this community of families were now having to shield, living with the fear of the virus, many losing work and having to focus on full time care. All Dimobi’s standard work had to be paused or adapted to find ways to support those families affected by the Covid 19 pandemic.
Dimobi Children’s Disability Trust received funding from the NET Coronavirus Appeal, through community foundation Forever Manchester, which enabled them to react quickly, employing additional volunteers to help provide support and deliver food parcels to more than 2000 families across Greater Manchester, as well as adapting their befriending programme to provide emotional support. They have also started working with families who are affected by domestic violence.
