Fighting Words NI is a creative writing network that encourages and amplifies the voices of children & young people in our society. They run a year-round programme of schools workshops, Write Clubs & special projects, which is free & supported by volunteer mentors who work one-on-one with the young writers to help them start to find their voices by testing and trusting their own ideas.
Funding from NET through the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland has helped Fighting Words to continue providing educational creative writing projects to young people. It supported them to design and run five creative writing workshops online and to create inspiring materials to help them develop their own original stories, songs, graphic novels and plays. In addition, the funding supported the recruitment and training of new volunteers. Between April and August 2020, over 1100 children, young people and adults participated in Fighting Words creative writing initiatives, many of whom were experimenting with creative writing for the first time.
The children’s stories are being published to Fighting Words’ website and social media feeds to share their creativity and experiences to readers and 72% of respondents to a Fighting Words NI survey said their child was more excited about writing as a result of taking part in a Fighting Words project.
