Move the Masses
The team at Move the Masses in York aims to improve the community’s health during the coronavirus pandemic by harnessing the positive effects of physical movement on wellbeing.
Before the restrictions were introduced, they offered a range of ways to do this, running free pop-up fitness sessions at parks and outdoor gyms and pairing volunteers with vulnerable or isolated people up to regularly walk together. Promoting the social aspect of being active encouraged people to gain confidence and reap the physical, mental and emotional benefits of moving more.
A grant from the National Emergencies Trust’s Coronavirus Appeal, through Two Ridings Community Foundation, enabled Move the Masses to coordinate their volunteers differently during the pandemic. Volunteers made regular welfare calls to vulnerable people in the local community and delivered over 8000 prescriptions. It also helped them to move their services online, creating an online stream of free workouts that bring fun and fitness to the most isolated.
