Staffordshire Women’s Aid (SWA)
Staffordshire Women’s Aid (SWA) helps and empowers women, children and men who are subjected to domestic and sexual violence and abuse to live safe lives. They offer a range of support including refuge accommodation, community outreach services, a rape crisis service, a 24-hour volunteer-run helpline and also an anonymised email system. They also work with schools and in the wider community offering training to ensure that women and children impacted by domestic and sexual violence and abuse are given a voice in their communities.
During the pandemic, funding from the National Emergencies Trust, through the Staffordshire Community Foundation, has helped the team to support its core services at a time of unprecedented need. It has enabled them to provide non-perishable food and other essential items, such as toiletries, baby clothes and equipment, to families seeking support at the refuge. It has also contributed towards creating four additional refuge accommodation units, across Staffordshire, which have enabled vulnerable women and children to escape domestic violence during lockdowns.
