Taunton Scrubbers are a volunteer sewing group brought together to help the healthcare workers of Taunton and the surrounding area; and who can make anything – from scrubs and wash bags, to headbands. During the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the shortages of scrubs and PPE, worn by carers, GPs and hospital staff created a crucial demand for their skills. The group started with one person and now comprises 1000 members who make and deliver scrubs and more to NHS staff and healthcare workers for free.
The local driving school and local people who had been furloughed helped to distribute the scrubs and carry out administrative tasks. Funds received from the NET Coronavirus Appeal, through Somerset Community Foundation, enabled Taunton scrubbers to buy quality fabric to make up to 600 sets of scrubs a week.
