“The prevalence of UK-wide disasters on the new National Risk Register highlights the pressing need for the kind of whole-society response that we saw during Covid-19, when the public, private and charity sectors came together to support those affected.
“But we mustn’t wait until the next emergency to join the dots. We need to find ways to work together now to strengthen the UK’s disaster resilience. The publication of the new Register in digital format is a helpful step forward, providing a more dynamic and transparent resource.
“As an evolution, it would be helpful to see detail added now on the agencies that may be able to respond during different types of disasters. This would support a more joined up approach during emergencies, as well as agencies’ preparedness exercises.
“In the meantime, we are finding ways to work more collaboratively with our emergency response peers across the charity sector. Today we are announcing a unique partnership with REACT Disaster Response and the British Red Cross, which will mean we can come together at speed to ensure those affected by future emergencies receive fast, wrap-around support.”
