A week in the life of an Operations Director
News and blogsA peek behind the scenes at National Emergencies Trust as Helen Killingley shares ‘a week in the life’ of an Operations Director

The role of an Operations Director often gets pigeonholed into a single 'bucket'. But it's the dynamic interplay of strategy, relationship building, and problem-solving that truly defines the role. Let me share a glimpse into my past week:
- Making friends: Inducting our new Special Advisors was a highlight. Special Advisors come from a variety of backgrounds and sectors, bringing valuable advice and surge support to the Executive Team on specific areas. They provide additive, informed advice and their expertise will be invaluable as we navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead. Their support is a testament to our commitment to building strong partnerships. Watch this space as we plan to introduce them with you all.
- Building strategic alliances: Engaging with The Curve Group (opens in a new tab) (pictured above, L-R: Lindsey, Kelly, Helen, Sophie), who will be fundamental to our operations during an appeal by delivering our recruitment and onboarding. Their innovative approach will undoubtedly streamline our operations and improve the appeal team’s experience. They are a great example of the strategic partnerships that it is vital for the Trust to build.
- Maintaining key partnerships: Our distribution network is vital to ensure we can share funds fast and fairly; none more so than the Community Foundation network (opens in a new tab). They are the experts – with local knowledge and expertise in grant making. It was a delight to join many of the CEOs from across the network and explore further opportunities to support their communities.
- HR and people development: It’s been a busy time in the world of HR post-election too, and navigating the potential shifts in the employment landscape has been a key focus post-election, with support from our HR provider. And, as we move into annual appraisal season, I'm also working closely with managers to equip them with the tools and support they need to conduct meaningful performance reviews.
- Championing opportunities with our volunteers: We love it when people want to volunteer their time and expertise at the Trust and have recently had two new faces join our team calls. It’s so important to understand and align their motivations with our objectives for equal and mutual benefit.
- Innovation at the core: Exploring the potential of a new CRM platform was a real eye-opener. It has huge potential to open up the possibilities and mitigate key risks for our fundraising department; drive the potential for data-driven grant-making, and maximise efficiencies. I'm eager to see how we can leverage this technology to optimise our operations.
- Preparing for the unexpected: A significant part of my role involves emergency preparedness (as is the case for our whole team!) Last week it was through new policy work to keep up to date with the rising risks in cyber and data security. This week, our upcoming exercise alongside donors, partners, and trustees will be invaluable. It reinforces the importance of robust processes and effective decision-making in challenging circumstances. We’ll be sharing some of our donors’ takeaways in due course.
Every day brings new challenges and opportunities. The role of an Operations Director is as varied as it is rewarding. It's about orchestrating the symphony of people, processes, and technology to drive organisational success.
